A little historical background
Herbert Simon's Logic Theorist working notes
Below (and as a faint background behind my Background) are some of Herbert Simon's handwritten notes from 1955, working through the processing steps of the Logic Theorist — the program Allen Newell, Herb Simon and Cliff Shaw built to prove theorems from Whitehead and Russell's Principia Mathematica. The Logic Theorist is one of the first working artificial intelligence programs to exhibit complex cognition, and its computational basis — search —remains one of the deepest foundations of artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Allen Newell was my graduate advisor in computer science at Carnegie Mellon, and Herb Simon taught the first course I took in graduate school.
